It looks like American Blackout II. In the award-winning documentary film “American Blackout,” Ian Inanda chronicles how Republicans crossed over in the primary to beat one of America’s most progressive Congressional representatives, Cynthia McKinney. Now, Barbara Anne Ferris, a 52-year-old “Democrat,” is being endorsed by the Cleveland Plain Dealer, over incumbent Dennis Kucinich. When I spoke to Ferris on Sunday, I was dressed in a golf shirt and tan dress slacks to gather signatures at the Earthfest at the Cleveland Zoo. I asked her if she was a Democrat. She said, “You have to be one in Cleveland to win” and pointed out that a lot of Republicans were supporting her. Her website recently directed Republicans to ask for a Democratic ballot to defeat Kucinich.

Now, what are Kucinich’s great sins? According to the Plain Dealer, it is the fact that he “cobbled together a creaky, left-slanted platform” in the presidential primary. The Plain Squealer also noted, that “His legislative initiatives, whether for universal health care or his long-talked-of federal Department of Peace, are most informed by his place well to the left of all of Ohio’s other representatives.”

Thus, the Republican-owned Plain Dealer, the Republican Party, and a Republican candidate in Democratic trappings are conspiring to oust the populist Kucinich, whose only sin is trying to bring health care to 44 million Americans – the type of universal health care available in every other democracy.

The Plain Dealer endorsed Ferris as “the Democrat more in tune with the community.” The community the Plain Dealer speaks of is a small, ruthless corporate community, which elected the low-IQ’ed son of a former CIA director. It is a community that loves torture, the illegal war in Iraq and spying on Americans without warrant. Ferris is fraud.

It makes sense that the GOP would want to take out Dennis. He and the Progressive Caucus really tell it like it is.

It is good to be constantly reminded that the supposedly non-partisan arbiters of our news (like the Plain Squealer) are owned by GOP families. At least in other countries the papers are aligned with political factions more openly.

Anybody know how well Ferris is doing in the polls?

I’ve known Barbara for a dozen years — ever since I moonlighted as a waitress while working at a Democratic consulting firm in DC — and can tell you she’s no fraud. Her commitment to peace through her work with the UN, the Peace Corps, and as founder of the International Women’s Democracy Center (http://www.iwdc.org), where she trains women around the world on how to vote and how to organize to run for office, is something that I would think Green Party members (and others who read your blog) would commend.

As for Barbara wanting to demonstrate that her support comes from those within and outside the Democratic Party, what’s wrong with that?

Thanks for the personal assessment of her.

But how do you address the issue of her being used as a tool to get Dennis out the door? Is she participating in the baiting of Dennis as being out of touch?
